The consumer is the decisive factor in a country’s economic development. To provide protection to consumers according to the highest European standards, the Ministry of Economy develops policies and provides the necessary legislative and regulatory framework.
Thus, to develop the national framework of strategic planning in the field of consumer protection by transposing the community acquis and the best international practices in the field of consumer protection, the Consumer Protection Strategy for 2013-2020 was adopted. The goal of this Strategy is to harmonize the principles, objectives and methods of achieving the objectives related to consumer protection with those applied in the European Union and at international level. The overall medium-term objective of the Strategy is to build the decision-making and protection skills of consumers by: i) reducing the level of the risk to have dangerous products on the market; ii) reducing the level of transactions that are prejudicial to consumers; ii) increasing the consumers’ decision-making capacity through education and awareness raising; iv) improving the process of claiming the rights and recovering damages.
In addition, the Law on Loan Contracts for Consumers, developed by the Ministry of Economy and approved in 2013 aims at consumer protection by creating equitable conditions for obtaining loans, as well as by encouraging the responsible behavior of creditors in granting loans to consumers, as well as by transposing the community norms concerning the loan contracts for consumers into a consolidated national act. Moreover, amendments were made to the Civil and Contravention Codes to bring the current legislation in compliance with the Law on Loan Contracts for Consumers.
